What is a Reproduction clinic?
It is a specialised clinic that helps those couples that cannot achieve pregnancy by natural methods. Must be authorised by the General Sanitation Department (el departament de Sanitat de la Generalitat).

When should you consider an assisted reproduction clinic?
After one year of trying without success, you should have a basic fertility study done in order to determine the cause or possible causes of the inability to achieve pregnancy or find solutions.

How is artificial insemination from the partner or a donor performed?
It consists of inserting the spermatozoids through a cannula into the uterus, making it coincide with the ovulation. It’s an easy technique, achieving pregnancies 15% to 25% per cycle and 30% to 40% after four attempts.

What does the in vitro fertilisation IVF-ICSI consist of?
It consists of obtaining embryos, after the “in vitro” fertilisation of the eggs in the laboratory, in order to transfer them to the uterus. The treatment has various phases:

1. It begins with hormonal treatment to obtain a sufficient number of eggs, controlled by vaginal echographies and estrogen hormone analysis.
2. When the follicles that contain the eggs reach the sufficient size and number, the echo-guided extraction through the vagina follows.
3. In the IVF laboratory, next to the room where the puncture takes place, the fertilisation is carried out and can be spontaneous or with an ICSI sperm microinjection.
4. The fertilised eggs divide, thus achieving embryos that will be selected and transferred to the uterus (maximum 3 embryos).

When is IVF with donor eggs necessary?
It’s necessary when the eggs are of low quality or are very limited (menopause, surgery, genetics). The most effective option in these cases is the use of donor eggs, fertilising them with the semen of the partner, transferring the embryos to the future mother’s uterus. The success rate is 60%.
